About Martin Jimenez
I was born in a small town in Jalisco, Mexico. I moved to the United States with my family at an early age, and spent my remaining childhood in the Mount Shasta area, with regular visits to my hometown. The exploration of self-identity while living within two cultures, and being surrounded by rich cultural and physical landscapes, inspired my passion for art. I began taking photography and art courses in my teenage years, and I continue to learn and explore new artistic methods.
I studied science and teaching at California State University, Chico. I have worked as a professional portrait and art photographer since 1994, and as a teacher since 2000. The majority of my students have come from a similar cultural background, having moved from Mexico to Northern California in search of opportunities. In this, I have a continuous reminder of the strength required to pursue dreams not yet achieved by previous generations, such as a college education.
While family and teaching fills my heart, I am drawn to create art with a sense of strength and vitality as an expression of my past and current life experiences. I feel a deep affinity with the steady and peaceful work ethic that I saw in my family and neighbors in Mexico. I try to portray this in many of my paintings. I also use various painting and printing methods to depict movement, often using vibrant colors and geometrical designs. I have enjoyed exhibiting my artwork in local galleries and museums. I hope that my artistic expression can offer inspiration for others to find their own voice through art.
